Why is coil count important?
The amount of coils, or springs, in an innerspring unit and their specific pattern are important to a mattress’s comfort and longevity. Generally, higher coil counts provide more support (resistance to weight) and comfort. Typically, coil count is based on the number of individual springs in a full size (also known as a double size) mattress. Some manufacturers display the actual coil count for queen size sets. If you are unsure about coil count, ask your salesperson the specific coil count for the particular size and style of mattress you are interested in.
O.K., now I know why coil count is important, which one do I buy?
Typically, for average sized adults, an innerspring unit of 336 or higher is suitable. It is best to find a comfortable mattress with the highest coil count your budget will allow. Consult with your salesperson for your specific needs, what may be right for someone else may not be right for you. Those who are overweight or spend a lot of time on their mattress benefit the most from a higher coil count.
What is an enclosed coil?
In an enclosed coil unit, each coil is individually wrapped. Coils are barrel shaped, each enclosed in a separate flexible fabric pocket. These pockets are attached to the pockets surrounding them. These coils provide independent support and comfort allowing the mattress to better fit the natural curves of your body. Individually wrapped coils help reduce motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other.
What is foam encased?
A high-density foam border surrounds the perimeter of the innerspring unit. This helps provide a comfortable sleeping surface from edge to edge.
What is memory foam?
Memory foam, also referred to as visco-elastic, is high-density foam that helps relieve pressure points. The memory foam surface conforms and molds to the contours of your body. Memory foam is heat sensitive, so it is very important to spend at least 15 minutes on mattresses containing visco-elastic foam to achieve the true feel.
What is a foundation?
The foundation is an alternative to a box spring. It looks like a traditional box spring. A foundation is a kiln dried hardwood frame with a slat system. Foundations are made to support and match the mattress it comes with. It provides a lighter and more cost effective alternative to a traditional heavy box spring. Foundations are usually 7 ˝ “ high, but are available in a 5” low profile to lower bedding or a 9” high profile to raise bedding.
Do I have to buy the set?
You can buy the mattress and box spring/foundation separately. Most manufacturers warranties are voided if they are not bought in sets. Mattresses and the box spring/foundations they come with are made to work with each other to provide the best combination of support and comfort.
